May is declared as Hypertension Awareness Month through Proclamation No. 1761 signed in 2009 to prevent and control hypertension and its cardiovascular complications in the Philippines.
The awareness month aims to increase public awareness on the different risks of this progressive and lift threatening disease. Millions of Filipinos suffer from hypertension and its cardiovascular complications and thousands are unnecessarily disabled and/or die prematurely from it. In compliance to this, the Department of Health enjoins medical specialty societies, government and non-government organizations, professional associations and allied groups to celebrate the said event.
This year’s theme is "#BantayBP Magpacheck at ma-monitor. Now Na!". This aims to remind people to have regular checkup and monitoring of blood pressure. Likewise, promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle to prevent and control hypertension.
